Over the last few days you’ve heard about the need for economic development as the key to First Nations self‑determination, about the desire for bipartisan support for place‑based and community‑led approaches, and from Stan Grant on working together across our differences.

Last time I spoke with you in Brisbane about the productivity challenge, our plans to reform the Productivity Commission, and how we turn headwinds into tailwinds in the pursuit of a stronger economy.

This time I want to talk with you about our progress to here, and our plans from here.

Thanks Michael and James, thanks Phil for the chance to have a chat shortly, and thanks to the Financial Review and BHP for hosting us here in Sydney, and for the invitation to speak today.

I acknowledge the Gadigal people on whose lands we meet, and pay respects to elders, customs and traditions.

I’m so pleased for this opportunity and for so many reasons, but perhaps above all because it brings together three things I really value.

My gratitude for Griffith and a good excuse to be back here;

Our shared love of books – especially about the economy and the world;

And my respect for Andrew – for his big brain and his even bigger contribution.

Today, you’ve heard from the PM and others about how we’re trying to help you shape that.

So, I won’t cover exactly the same ground in the time I have with you today.

But what I do want to do is explain to you why the partnerships we’re building with you are such an important part of our economic agenda.

The soft landing we seek at home and in the global economy is assumed but not assured.

I want to thank the Brazilian Presidency and especially Minister Haddad for the agenda he has put together for us.

It’s only been a week since the PM and I announced our cost‑of‑living tax cut for middle Australia, and I want to spend the bulk of my time talking about the economic benefits of our changes.

Thank you to the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader for wonderful, heartfelt tributes which do great justice to the life of a great man.
