Productive Discussions On Mental Illness and Travel Insurance

10 March 2016

We thank representatives of the insurance, mental health, consumer advocacy and legal sectors for their attendance today at Labor’s roundtable to discuss mental illness and travel insurance.

It was valuable to have a broad cross-section of voices in the room to have productive discussions about the various issues regarding the coverage and treatment of mental illness in the travel insurance industry.

The conversations made clear that there are some gaps in the understanding of the issue and in the data required to broaden mental illness coverage.

There are no easy solutions, but we will continue to work with the industry advocates to see what more can be done and what role policy-makers may have in this process.

There has been a disappointing lack of leadership on this issue from the Coalition, and we would like to see some progress towards improving outcomes for consumers.
