Again today the Treasurer has been sprung exaggerating the number of jobs flowing from his hiring credits program, which is only expected to create around 45,000 jobs and not the 450,000 he has claimed.

In Senate Estimates last year Treasury Officials exposed the Treasurer’s false claims by confirming that 90 per cent of the jobs supported by the Hiring Credit would have occurred without taxpayer funded subsidies:

“about 10 per cent of employment in these firms is genuinely additional… 10 per cent of 450,000, about 45,000.”

TREASURY, SENATE ESTIMATES, MONDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2020.

In his press conference today the Treasurer claimed:

“We put in place the JobMaker hiring credit which Treasury said will support hundreds of thousands of jobs and get younger people from the unemployment queue and into work”.

This king of gross exaggeration is typical of a Government which is long on spin and short on substance.

In addition the Treasurer made no mention of the fact that during the most severe recession in almost a century the Government has deliberately excluded almost a million Australians aged over 35 from hiring subsidies.

Instead of a plan to get Australians back into work, the Treasurer is leaving people behind.  His proposed changed to industrial relations will make things even worse.

After racking up a trillion dollars of debt, the Morrison Government should have more to show for it in terms of jobs and opportunities but instead it has wasted too much on rorts and advertising.
